About us
Vets Now is the UK’s leading provider of dedicated out-of-hours and emergency veterinary care, and the Gateshead clinic sits among the top five busiest in the entire network. That ranking isn’t incidental. It reflects a clinic that has built a genuine reputation for high-quality emergency medicine, a steady stream of complex, varied cases, and a team that has learned to perform at pace without losing its cohesion.
As a PDSA host practice, the work here carries a dimension beyond the clinical. We provide emergency care to pets whose owners might otherwise face impossible choices, and that dual purpose, community responsibility alongside clinical excellence, runs through the culture of the team.
Leadership at Gateshead understands that a high-performing emergency environment is only sustainable when the people inside it are genuinely supported. Rotas are designed with deliberate recovery time built in. Locum vets return to this clinic repeatedly, which is one of the more telling indicators of what it’s actually like to work here. This is a place that earns its reputation on the floor.
George our Miniature Schnauzer was very uncomfortable on Boxing Day. He was squirming around on his tummy, unable to settle. We rang our vets and spoke to a veterinary nurse who advised us to ring Vets Now. After a quick and efficient phone call getting all the information they needed we were told to take him straight there. He was seen very quickly by two vets, a thorough examination and some meds given and he was back home within the hour – Julie H – Google Review
About this role
This is a permanent position available full-time, with part-time and weekend-only arrangements genuinely considered. The full-time rota averages 40 hours per week across weekday nights and weekend rotations on a 1:2 pattern, with a share of bank holidays and a hard cap of three consecutive nights maximum. It’s a structure designed so you can give your best at work, without running empty outside it.
Day to day, you’ll be working through a high-volume, varied ECC caseload across the full spectrum of emergency presentations:
- Triage and critical assessment: Rapidly evaluating presentations across medical and surgical emergencies, often with limited history and a need for clear, decisive clinical thinking.
- Emergency interventions: Managing CPR, airway stabilization, fluid resuscitation, and urgent medical management of critically ill patients.
- Emergency surgery: Performing soft-tissue procedures including GDV correction, exploratory laparotomy, and wound management under emergency conditions.
- Diagnostic workup: Using in-house diagnostics to support rapid, confident clinical decision-making across a wide case spectrum.
- Client communication: Holding space for distressed owners through honest, empathetic conversations about prognosis, options, and next steps.
New team members are supported through Vets Now’s AdvantEdge induction programme, which combines a week of hands-on practical training with 20 hours of flexible, case-based e-learning completed at your own pace.
About you
You do your best work under pressure, not in spite of it. The diagnostic challenge of emergency medicine draws you in, the speed of it, the stakes of it, and the particular satisfaction of stabilizing a patient who arrived in crisis.
You may be a veterinarian with dedicated ECC experience ready for a clinic that genuinely matches your pace, or a motivated GP vet who has built significant out-of-hours experience and is ready to commit fully to emergency medicine. Either path is valid here.
We’re looking for someone who brings:
- A strong clinical foundation in emergency and critical care, through direct ECC experience or substantial out-of-hours GP exposure
- Confidence in emergency surgical procedures and critical patient management
- The ability to communicate with clarity and genuine empathy when owners are at their most distressed
- A team-first approach, because this clinic functions through real collaboration, not individual performance
- MRCVS registration, or confirmed eligibility to register with the RCVS
Our offer
- Base salary up to £75,000, dependent on experience
- £10,000 recognition bonus
- £5,000 relocation allowance
- £1,500 CPD allowance plus 35 paid CPD hours pro rata
- ECC certificate support, including financial support and paid study leave
- Seven weeks pro rata annual leave
- Private medical insurance
- Enhanced sick, maternity, paternity, and adoption pay
- Professional membership fees paid
- Up to 50% discounted staff pet care
We’re also happy to explore remuneration arrangements that better suit your individual circumstances, and we’ll work through those details as our conversations develop.
