Step into a genuinely flexible companion animal role in one of Auckland’s most desirable coastal suburbs. Practice thoughtful, evidence-based medicine alongside a collaborative team that values open communication and shared problem solving. Enjoy the backing of a New Zealand-owned group with real professional support, while designing a schedule that fits the life you actually want to live.
About us
Set in St Heliers, one of Auckland’s most sought-after coastal suburbs, this is a practice where the morning commute might include a walk along the beach before the first consult. It’s a clinic that reflects its surroundings: relaxed in feel, serious about the medicine.
Our team genuinely works as one. Veterinarians and nurses work side by side with clear communication, shared problem solving, and a collective commitment to seeing every case through properly. There’s no hierarchy for the sake of it. Instead, you’ll find an environment where nurses are empowered to contribute meaningfully to patient care and where clinical decisions are made collaboratively, not in silos.
As part of the Veterinary Hospital Group, a proudly New Zealand-owned network, our practice carries the advantages of group support without the corporate overhead. Think real professional development pathways, strong operational backing, and a leadership philosophy that puts team well-being and sustainable careers at the centre of every decision. It’s the independence of a standalone clinic with the resources and stability of something bigger behind it.
I love working with the close knit and friendly team at St Heliers. I am always welcomed to work with a smile, the banter is on point and I know I can voice my opinions and have them heard, I feel like we are all working towards the same goal.
About this role
This is a companion animal general practice position with one standout feature: genuine flexibility. Whether you’re looking for full-time hours or a part-time arrangement that fits around the rest of your life, the roster is built around you, not the other way around.
Day to day, you’ll be working through a varied GP caseload in a well-equipped hospital with experienced nursing support at every stage. The client base here is engaged, communicative, and values careful diagnostics and evidence-based recommendations. That means you’ll have the space and the trust to practice the way you were trained to.
Your clinical focus will include:
- Working cases through from initial presentation to outcome, with the time and support to do it properly.
- Delivering thoughtful, evidence-based medicine to a clientele that genuinely values quality care.
- Collaborating closely with a skilled nursing team on everything from routine wellness to complex medical workups.
- Contributing to a culture of open communication and continuous improvement across our hospital.
For those with an interest in clinical leadership or management, there’s scope to grow into those responsibilities. But it’s not a requirement. The priority is finding someone who loves good medicine and works well within a team.
About you
You’re a confident companion animal veterinarian who finds real satisfaction in the clinical process: building a picture, communicating clearly with the client, and seeing the case through to a good result. You take pride in practising thoughtful, evidence-based medicine and you’re energised by an environment where your colleagues hold themselves to the same standard.
You communicate with clarity and empathy, both with your team and with pet owners navigating difficult decisions. You’re someone who contributes to the culture around you, not just clinically, but by showing up as a reliable, collaborative presence in our team.
Leadership or management experience is a genuine bonus and will be valued, but it’s not a dealbreaker. What matters most is your clinical confidence, your communication skills, and your desire to be part of a team that operates with mutual respect and professional integrity.
A recognised veterinary degree and eligibility for registration with the New Zealand Veterinary Council are required.
Our location
St Heliers is one of Auckland’s most sought-after coastal suburbs. Close to the beach, cafés and coastal walkways, our clinic offers a genuinely enjoyable place to work. Many of our team start their day with a walk along the waterfront before the first consult. You’ll also benefit from a motivated, well-resourced client base that values and supports good-quality veterinary care.
Our offer
Flexibility sits at the heart of this opportunity. We’re genuinely committed to designing roles that fit individual needs, whether that’s a full-time position, a reduced schedule, or something in between. This isn’t a token gesture. It’s central to how the team is built.
You’ll receive a competitive remuneration package, including an Auckland cost-of-living weighting that reflects the realities of living in the city. Additional package elements include:
- New Zealand Veterinary Council and NZVA registration fees covered.
- A generous continuing professional development allowance, with access to an advanced practitioner pathway for those with a special clinical interest.
- Visa sponsorship and relocation assistance for candidates moving from outside New Zealand.
We are also open to exploring alternative remuneration structures that better suit your individual circumstances. That conversation starts early and is driven by what works for you.
