A career opportunity in a Veterinary Pharmaceutical role provides a wide range of opportunities that is significantly different to Veterinary Hospital or Veterinary Public Health environments. If the immediacy of dealing with emergency cases or infectious outbreaks is of less appeal to you, then the world of Big Pharma awaits with open arms.
In parallel with this trend comes rapid changes in the Veterinary Pharmaceutical jobs arena with some organisations scaling back employment because of duplication as a result of mergers of acquisitions whilst others are rapidly expanding as they reap the rewards of less competition and growth.
There is an aspect of glass-half-full/glass-half-empty in the Animal Health industry with large animal and agricultural consolidations being offset by the significant growth in companion animal markets. The largest factor influencing the recruitment of Veterinarians in this industry is the continuing demand for new drugs for companion animals, being driven in part by changing consumer trends consumers and overall improvement in socio-economic living standards. Globally just over ten percent of all qualified Veterinarians work in the Pharmaceutical or Agricultural Veterinary space and there are three main areas:
- Veterinary pharmaceuticals and biologicals
- Veterinary biotechnology
- Veterinary diagnostics
